You can spot an amateur logo in about two seconds, even if you couldn't explain exactly why. Usually it comes down to one of the mistakes below, all of which are fixable without a huge budget.
Too many colors, fonts, or ideas at once
A logo trying to say everything about a business at once usually ends up saying nothing clearly. The strongest marks are simple enough to recognize instantly and reproduce at a tiny size, like a favicon, without turning into a smudge.
No favicon or app-icon version was ever made
A logo that only works as a wide horizontal wordmark falls apart the moment it needs to become a small square icon, a social profile photo, or a browser tab favicon. A proper logo project should hand over an icon-only variant specifically built to survive at 32x32 pixels.
Only one file format exists
If the only file you have is a JPG someone exported once, you don't actually have a usable logo, you have a picture of one. A complete logo package includes vector source files, transparent PNGs, and both light and dark background versions, so it can go on a website, a business card, or a truck without someone recreating it from scratch.
It was designed to be liked, not to be distinct
A common trap is designing toward whatever looks "nice" in isolation, rather than toward what will make the brand recognizable next to competitors. A logo's job is to be identifiable at a glance after someone has seen it two or three times, not to win a beauty contest on its own.
The color palette wasn't documented
Without documented exact color values (hex codes, not "sort of navy"), every new marketing piece introduces a slightly different shade, and the brand slowly drifts into inconsistency across your website, packaging, and social media.
What a properly scoped logo project actually includes
- Multiple real design directions, not one option with color swaps
- A primary mark plus a simplified icon variant
- Documented brand colors and fonts
- Vector source files you actually own, not just a JPG
